John S. Nelson Scrapbook
John S. Nelson, Springfield College Class of 1914, was “an even-tempered, ever-smiling, care-free blonde” from North Easton, Massachusetts. He graduated from Oliver Ames High School and was a member and captain of the basketball team when they won the state championship in 1911. He also played football, baseball, hockey, and was the captain and, eventually the instructor, of the class soccer team. He then went on to coach the St. Paul Church basketball team and was an instructor in Winchester Square gymnasium during the winters of 1911 and 1912. His scrapbook contains materials from his time at Springfield College, 1911-1914. Materials include his varsity letters in baseball, basketball and soccer; photos of the sports teams and players from the period, including pictures of the gymnastics team; building pictures of the McCurdy Natatorium, Marsh Library and Lake Massasoit; newspaper articles and pictures covering both his high school and his college years; brochures and general college memorabilia; and signatures of classmates and general thoughts from his time at Springfield College.
