Clinical Services
The Department of Physical Therapy has two exercise groups for community members. These groups are run both as a community service and as a part of our clinical program for students in our Doctor of Physical Therapy program. Each group is structured to have faculty directors, who supervise and direct every group, have intimate familiarity the status and needs of each community member, as well as with the knowledge, skills and expectations for student performance. Whether students are providing assistance with established treatment programs or conducting ongoing examination and intervention planning, the faculty directors tailor activities to meet both individual group member and student needs. The Springfield College Stroke Exercise Group
The Springfield College Stroke Exercise Group offers a twice-weekly exercise and training program for up to 12 community members living with chronic effects of stroke. The Stroke Exercise Group is run as an integrated academic-clinical experience. Community participants attend two sessions per week for 8-10 weeks in each academic semester. The participants are joined by students who provide one-on-one assistance with exercises and activities intended to help community participants maintain and improve flexibility, strength, endurance, balance and walking ability. The Stroke Exercise Group was developed and is directed by Regina Kaufman, PT, EdD, NCS, Professor of Physical Therapy, and Kimberly Nowakowski, PT, MS, GCS, Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy. For further information contact Dr. Kaufman by email or through the department at 413-748-3590. Click here to e-mail Dr. Regina Kaufman. The Springfield College Hip Exercise Group
The Springfield College Hip Exercise Group offers a group exercise format for people who have completed their standard post operative care protocol from hip surgery. This program is designed to provide continued care for those who still have leg weakness, balance problems, and walking difficulty that are a result of a hip surgery. Interested individuals from the community are examined and evaluated by a faculty member who is a licensed physical therapist. Those people who have problems that qualify them for participation in the group program join the weekly 45 minute exercise class. The participants in the exercise class are joined by students who provide instruction and assistance with the exercises and activities. The Hip Exercise Group was developed by Elizabeth Montemagni, DPT, Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy and Julia Chevan, PT, PhD, OCS, Professor of Physical Therapy. For further information contact Dr. Montemagni by email or though the department at 413-748-3590. Click here to e-mail Dr. Liz Montemagni.
