Springfield College Professor And Student Travel To Honduras To Produce Documentary For National Public Television Series

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Springfield College Assistant Professor of Communications Jody Santos and English and Education major Katie Barsevich recently traveled to Honduras to produce a documentary for The Visionaries, a public television series hosted by Oscar-nominated Sam Waterston of NBC’s Law & Order and HBO’s The Newsroom. Barsevich, who had previously participated in a study abroad program at the College, expanded her international experience by traveling with the production crew. The documentary focused on Zamorano University and its mission to educate youth from underprivileged backgrounds to become the leaders of Latin America in agriculture and industry.
Santos served as producer and director on the project and Barsevich was a production assistant. Barsevich is currently a senior at Springfield College and during her experience with the documentary series, she was able to assist The Visionaries’ staff with many video and audio aspects of the program.
The Visionaries is an acclaimed public television series that has produced more than 150 documentaries all over the world. The series is dedicated to telling stories of positive social change by profiling organizations that are making a difference in the world. The Visionaries is preparing for its 18th season on public television.
Zamorano University is an international four-year university that welcomes 1,200 students a year from many different countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. The school uses a combination of academic class work and “learning by doing,” with students spending 20 hours a week working in on-campus businesses, laboratories, or outreach programs. Over the course of its 70-year history, Zamorano has played a vital role in the transformation of the agricultural sector and the rural development of the more than 19 countries.
The study abroad program at Springfield College provides an opportunity for personal and academic growth for students. Springfield College maintains relationships with many countries, offering students a variety of choices when picking a program. Springfield College students have traveled to China, Spain, England, Australia, Ireland, Italy, Argentina, Scotland and New Zealand to study abroad.
