SAFE? By Robert Markey William Blizard Gallery*
As Robert Markey worked with disadvantaged children creating mosaic murals in Brazil and Cambodia, he began to notice a startling trend of human trafficking—in both sex and slave labor industries. He also became aware of the increase of these cases in the United States over the past years. Markey created the installation SAFE? to honor these brave children. Consisting of 30 paintings of Brazilian and Cambodian youth, the works are intended to raise awareness of this dangerous issue and the risks these children face daily.

Drew the Dramatic Fool
Help! Help! I Know This Title is Long, But Somebody’s Trying to Kill Me! Directed by Avner Eisenberg (Avner the Eccentric) Appleton Auditorium, Fuller Arts Center, 7:30 p.m.
All the performers in this vaudeville variety show have been murdered–except for Drew the Dramatic Fool. Unfortunately for him, the show must go on, or he’s next. Drew attempts every act in the show, from juggling 36 balls to sawing a woman in half, in this comical examination of fears—fear of performing, fear of failure, and fear of death. When courage fails, the only answer is dramatic foolishness.

October 1 Film Event Mountainfilm on Tour
Appleton Auditorium, Fuller Arts Center, 7 p.m.
Direct from Mountainfilm in Telluride, Colo., come the best new selections from America’s leading independent documentary film festival. Extraordinary films of various lengths feature extreme adventure sports from around the globe, glimpses of exotic cultures, and contemporary environmental and social issues. Heart-pounding thrills, fascinating scenery, humorous activities, and remarkable people abound. Acclaimed filmmaker Ken Burns reflects that “Mountainfilm reminds us of the force of filmmaking, about things that matter, worlds worth exploring, and conversations worth sustaining.” This touring festival has attracted standing-room-only crowds on its previous visits to Springfield College!
October 17 Concert
Three of Cups: 25 Years in 25 Songs Townhouse Conference Room, 7:30 p.m.
Three of Cups is comprised of vocalist Deborah Claar and Springfield College violin instructor Ann-Marie Messbauer, who also sings and plays guitar and percussion for the group. Their collaboration began in 1987 at Boston University and in celebration of their 25th anniversary, they have released a new CD From the Pulpit to the Pub. The duo will perform selections from their new album, as well as some of their favorites from years past.
October 21 – November 20 Art Exhibition Paintings by David Barclay William Blizard Gallery*
David Barclay’s exhibit features realistic, close-up paintings of musical instruments and European building facades. His works bring out the shape, curves, and details of his subjects, including creating a complex wood grain effect used in his instrument paintings. Barclay’s building facades are inspired by those he has seen during his travels in Europe, where he said he was “struck by the romantic quality of the architecture and the rich simplicity of its design.”

October 24 Reading Springfield College Faculty Springfield College Bookstore, 7:30 p.m.
Springfield College faculty members Justine Dymond, Allie Eaton, Dennis Gildea, Becky Lartigue, Margaret Lloyd, Missy-Marie Montgomery, and Rick Paar share original poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction.
Book signing and refreshments will follow the reading.

Catherine has just turned 25, her brilliant but unstable father she spent years caring for has died, her estranged sister has arrived to take charge, and Hal, a former student of her father’s who wants to explore his notebooks for hidden mathematical proofs, is paying her very affectionate attention. But has Catherine inherited her father's brilliance—or his mental imbalance? Suspenseful, funny, and surprising, Proof captivates with the tests of knowing trust and the challenge to sort out the links between genius and madness.

Paintings, drawings, digital imagery, sculpture, and ceramics reflect learning throughout the advanced education of art therapy and the undergraduate years of student of art or art education.

December 7-9 Dance Performance Dancing with Isadora: A Concert of New Choreography and Interactive Media Appleton Auditorium, Fuller Arts Center Friday and Saturday, 8 p.m.; Sunday 2 p.m.
Under the artistic direction of Professor Cynthia Nazzaro, dancers explore exciting possibilities that emerge when they create and perform choreography from memory and respond in real time to unplanned events. Using the motion capture program Isadora, choreographers create rich, technologically enhanced environments of sound, imagery, and sets in which dancers play and take risks.
