President Richard B. Flynn Honored at YMCA Golf Event

September 16, 2011

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 15, 2011—Springfield College President Richard B. Flynn was the special honoree at the 22nd Annual YMCA of Greater Springfield Golf Classic at Twin Hills Country Club on Aug. 18.

During his 12-year presidency, Flynn has stressed the importance of the long-standing relationship between the YMCA and Springfield College. While both have always been independent institutions, their histories are intertwined and Springfield College has been an educator of leaders in the YMCA since its inception.

This past year, Springfield College officially dedicated the Stitzer YMCA Center, a destination point for YMCA professionals. The center includes the national YMCA Hall of Fame, the administrative offices of the Association of YMCA Professionals (AYP), and the college’s office of YMCA relations, in addition to multipurpose rooms and gathering space that the YMCA has utilized. Springfield College was also named a premier leadership development center by the YMCA.

“It is a true honor to be recognized as part of this great annual event, and I accept the recognition on behalf of Springfield College,” Flynn said upon receiving the honor. “During my 12 years as president of Springfield College, I’ve come to appreciate more and more how unique and wonderful the collaboration between our two organizations really is, and how important that continued collaboration is to our mutual success.”

The YMCA of Greater Springfield annually recognizes a distinguished member of the community who has remained active with the organization at its golf classic, which serves as a fundraiser.
