SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Aug., 25, 2010 – The fall/winter lineup of visual and performing arts events at Springfield College features performances by the brilliant comic Avner the Eccentric, a production of “Dracula,” readings by an award-winning sports writer and a celebrated poet, a screening of “Mountainfilm on Tour,” dance concerts, a holiday music concert, and art exhibitions by major local and student artists. Most events are free of charge, and the free series poster is available by calling 748-3187.

Sept. 7- Oct. 8
Art Exhibition: “Related Physicality”
By: Ethel Poindexter
Raw assemblages of building materials challenge traditional ideas of gallery object art. Drywall, lumber, and plaster resemble a construction site or a project in restoration or deconstruction. Poindexter’s works explore questions of interrelationships between object, space, and experience.

Comedy: “Avner the Eccentric in Exceptions to Gravity”
Sponsored by SC Theatre
"Avner the Eccentric is a brilliant comic…hurt yourself hysterically funny. I laughed for two solid hours. The show only lasted an hour and a half." --Joel Siegel, ABC-TV
"If laughter really is the best medicine, Avner Eisenberg could easily cure everything that ails you. He’s a clown in the truest sense of the word…You’ve got to see it to believe it can be this much fun." --Boston Metro
Appleton Auditorium, Fuller Arts Center, 7:30 p.m.
Admission $5, students/seniors $2, children free

Oct. 4
Film Festival: “Mountainfilm on Tour”
Co-sponsored by the Springfield College Outing Club
Direct from Mountainfilm in Telluride, Colo., come the best new selections from America’s leading independent documentary film festival. Extraordinary films feature extreme adventure sports from around the globe, glimpses of exotic cultures, and contemporary environmental and social issues. Heart-pounding thrills, fascinating scenery, humorous activities, and remarkable people abound. Acclaimed filmmaker Ken Burns reflects that “Mountainfilm reminds us of the force of filmmaking, about things that matter, worlds worth exploring, and conversations worth sustaining.”
Appleton Auditorium, Fuller Arts Center, 7 p.m.

Oct. 18 - Nov. 19
Art Exhibition: “Drawings - New Work”
By: Tony Bragg
“My work is bound by the cold, barren mystery of rural New England. The snowy fields, dark woods, and frozen streams have been my home since I was a boy. My drawings are about dissecting, observing, and exploring a sense of place and the social and political ramifications of these observations.” --Tony Bragg

Reception for artist and public: Nov. 7, 2 - 4 p.m.

Oct. 26
Reading by Author Marty Dobrow, Springfield College associate professor of communications
The award-winning journalist reads from his new book, “Knocking on Heaven's Door: Six Minor Leaguers in Search of the Baseball Dream.” This compelling slice of Americana explores the double-edged culture of minor league baseball. On the one hand, it is almost bursting with feel-good elements: hokey promotions, fuzzy mascots leading fans in the singing of “Y-M-C-A,” earnest young players chasing their lifelong dreams. On the other hand, it is a savagely competitive business where a teammate’s success can hinder you, while his injury presents you with an opportunity.
Marsh Memorial Chapel, 7:30 p.m.
Book signing and refreshments will follow the reading.

Nov. 11 – 14
Theater: “Dracula”
By: Steven Dietz from the novel by Bram Stoker
Director: Martin Shell, associate professor of theater arts
Meet the original vampire in this energetic and ferocious theatrical adaptation of the Bram Stoker novel. As Count Dracula begins to exert his will upon the residents of London, they try to piece together the clues of his appearances – in a valiant attempt to save themselves from a hideous fate. Join them, if you dare!
“I want your fear. For your fear, like a current, rushes through your body. Your fear makes your heart pound. It renders your veins rich and full. Your fear hemorrhages deliciously within you.” – Count Dracula, “Dracula”
Appleton Auditorium, Fuller Arts Center
Thurs., Fri., Sat., 8 p.m.; Sun. 2 p.m.
Suggested donation $5, students and seniors $2

Nov. 17
Reading by Poet Jim Whitley, assistant dean, Springfield College School of Human Services
When Whitley won the prestigious 2009 Massachusetts Book Award, the judges wrote: "This remarkable collection of lyrical poems about love, loss, and moving on … brings the reader along the arc of a relationship, from breathless beginning to inevitable end…The poems, read aloud, roll off the tongue with an intelligence that avoids cleverness for its own sake. There is much to ponder and even more to discuss in this exceptional volume." This highly acclaimed poet last year published “The Goddess of Goodbye,” dedicated to the memory of his mother, and the award-winning, “This Is the Red Door.”
Marsh Memorial Chapel, 7:30 p.m.
