Springfield Mayor Proclaims June 19 Richard B. Flynn Day
June 19, 2009SPRINGFIELD, Mass., June 19, 2009 – Proclaiming the day as President Richard B. Flynn Day, Springfield Mayor Domenic J. Sarno honored Springfield College’s president on June 19, 2009 for ten years of leadership of the college which have benefitted the city and region.
Sarno read a proclamation at a City Hall ceremony honoring Flynn attended by representatives of the mayor’s and governor’s offices, city officials, community leaders, and representatives of the college and its board of trustees.
The proclamation cited Flynn’s leadership through major campus construction, national recognition for excellence in academic programs, growth in the student body, and strong community relationships and service.
“Richard B. Flynn, whose concern for the City of Springfield and the quality of life of its citizens has, by his vision, strategic planning, campus initiatives, and community involvement, worked to make Greater Springfield a better place in which to live, work, and learn,” the proclamation stated. It also cited national, state, and local recognition for exemplary community engagement that the college has received under Flynn’s guidance.
Additionally, the proclamation recognized that, under Flynn’s leadership, the college has been a major contributor to Greater Springfield’s economy “as one of its largest employers, a site of major campus construction and renovation, a purchaser of goods and services from local vendors, and an attractor of thousands of students and visitors to the region.”
“Richard B. Flynn, as president of the college known worldwide as the Birthplace of Basketball, the primary professional development college for YMCA leaders, and an innovator and leader in the fields of health and wellness, has focused national and international attention on the City of Springfield,” Sarno said in proclaiming President Richard B. Flynn Day and urging all citizens to acknowledge Flynn’s years of dedication and service.
