97th Springfield College Gymnastics Show To Feature ‘Entertainment’ Tonight’October 4, 2006
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Oct. 4, 2006 -- Springfield College gymnasts will present the 97th annual Springfield College Gymnastics Exhibition Show on Friday, Oct. 13, at 8 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m., in Blake arena on the campus. The show will present a gymnastic interpretation of “Entertainment Tonight,” the popular television entertainment newsmagazine.
With choreography to dynamic music, striking lighting effects, and stylish costumes, the Springfield College men’s and women’s gymnastics teams will perform on the full range of gymnastic apparatus and in floor exercises. A highlight of the evening will be tableaux, the event’s traditional finale of living statues by gymnasts in silver body paint.
This year’s show will open with gymnasts demonstrating a range of skills to the theme and music of “Mission Impossible II.” “Pirates of the Caribbean” will feature fast-pace tumbling. In “Survivor: Immunity Challenge” gymnasts will perform vaults and on bars demonstrating sticking dismounts. “Globe Trotters” will be a mini-trampoline performance of creative basketball slam dunks. “Movie Review Step Up” will feature a combination of dance and tumbling moves. A retrospective performance on the full range of gymnastic apparatus will illustrate feats from famous gymnasts of the ‘70s and ‘80s. Other performances will feature climbing, spinning, juggling, stilt walking and various gymnastic precision moves.
This year’s tableaux will pay tribute to famous musicals including “The Sound of Music,” “Music Man,” “The Greatest Show on Earth,” “The Wizard of Oz,” “Chariots of Fire,” and “Patton.”
Last year, the Springfield College Men’s Gymnastics Team placed second in the New England Men’s Gymnastics Invitational Championships, and sixth in the Eastern College Athletic Conference/Eastern Intercollegiate Gymnastics League Championships. Members of the college’s women’s gymnastics team who were finalists in the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Division III Championships will perform in the show. They are Jackie Mazzola in vaulting, Jill Silverman on the even bars, and Kerry McGowan and Heather Trudeau in floor exercise.
Tickets will be on sale at the door one hour before performances at $4 for children under age 12, $6 for seniors over age 65, and $8 for adults.
