SC President Richard B. Flynn To Be Commencement Speaker At MacMurray CollegeMay 20, 2004
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 20, 2004 -- Springfield College President Richard B. Flynn will return to his alma mater, MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill., to receive an honorary doctor of education degree and to deliver the address at MacMurray’s 153rd commencement services, Sunday, May 23, 2004, beginning at 1:30 p.m., in Annie Merner Chapel.
After earning his bachelor of science degree from MacMurray College in 1964, Flynn went on to earn a master’s degree from Ohio University and a doctoral degree from Columbia University. In 1994, he was inducted into the MacMurray College Athletic Hall of Fame, and in 2003, Springfield College awarded him an honorary doctor of humanics degree.
MacMurray College, founded in 1846, is an accredited, private, coeducational liberal arts institution affiliated with the United Methodist Church. It offers 28 major fields of study at its 60-acre campus 75 miles north of St. Louis, Mo.
Flynn became Springfield College president in 1999, following a distinguished 30-year career with the State of Nebraska and its higher education system. During that time he served as interim president of Peru State College and, at University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), as a faculty member; director of the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation; special assistant to the chancellor and director of information science and technology; and as dean of the College of Education.
Flynn has nationally recognized expertise in such diverse areas as strategic and long-range planning, leadership development, university-school-community collaboration, facility planning, and organizational evaluation. He is the author of four books, several book chapters, and more than three dozen articles on a wide range of topics.
Among the many national and international awards that Flynn has received are the Outstanding Educational Leadership Award of Phi Delta Kappa, the Service Award of Optimist International, and the honored professor title and award from both East China Normal University and South China Normal University. He has also received the UNO Chancellor's Medal.
