Concerts, Theatre, Art Exhibitions This Season At Springfield College

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Jan. 12, 2005 -- Springfield College’s winter/spring series of visual and performing arts programs open to the public will lead with the JENA Company of New York’s “My Soul Is a Witness,” the stirring musical dramatizing key events of the Civil Rights Movement. Other highlights will include an evening of swing dancing, a reading by award-winning author Magdalena Gomez, and art exhibitions by area professional artists and student artists. Most of the events are free of charge, and the free series poster is available by calling Professor Carol Mitchell at 748-3187.

Theater Production:
"My Soul Is a Witness"

Written by: David Barr III, award-winning Chicago playwright
Enacted by: JENA Company of New York
Theatrical production on a 60-city national tour dramatizing key events of the Civil Rights Movement. Stunning scenes highlight the diverse personalities and significant actions of Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, President Kennedy, comedian Dick Gregory, Mississippi sharecropper Fannie Lou Hamer, and many others crucial to the era. Soaring gospel music and pulsating protest songs punctuate this celebration of Black History Month.

Multimedia Performance:
"Why Art?"

Original multi-media, interdisciplinary, and intergenerational event promises to tell an astonishing and heartfelt story of who we are and why we create. Dancers, musicians, computer graphics animators, actors, and artists -- including professional artists, students, elders and youngsters side by side -- explore the shared need to give creative expression to our human experience.

"Swing Into Spring"

With special guests, the O-Tones

Dramatic Reading:
"Chopping"

Written and performed by: Magdalena Gomez
Tour-de-force dramatic work in which Mina, a compulsive shopper, reflects on her life, identity and sexuality. In various voices and costumes, Gomez celebrates the women who influenced her life, unlocking memories hidden in the secret life of objects. "Chopping" premiered at the Boston Women on Top Festival, 2001, and continues to be produced nationally. According to the Boston Globe, "Chopping" is "acted with gusto…emotionally engaging…remarkable."
