Summit on Positive Youth Development Through Sport
March 18-21, 2005

Hosted by the NFF Center for Youth Development Through Sport @ Springfield College

Does sport build character? How can a youth sport coach become a true mentor? How can my son and daughter get the most out of their sport experience? Can sport be created in a manner that promotes positive youth development? These are just four of the questions that will be addressed during this Summit.

Come network and share ideas with the leading sport psychology and youth development experts in the world. Whether you are a parent, student, sport psychologist, educator, coach, researcher, community leader, or youth development specialist, you will find plenty of valuable information, while enjoying interactive presentations, our March Madness Celebration at the Basketball Hall of Fame, and informal discussions with the best practitioners in the field.

    CONFERENCE FORMAT

The Summit will kick-off with a “March Madness Social” on Friday, March 18th from 6-10 p.m. at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

The working part of the Summit will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 19th and will continue until noon on Monday, the 21st. The event is designed for all participants to share their ideas, concerns, and suggestions on how to structure sport in ways that foster positive youth development. Following the opening remarks in which a generic framework for youth development through sport will be introduced, participants will have an opportunity to work in small groups to identify issues and suggest topics that they would like to have addressed during the Summit. The information generated from these small groups will be tabulated and the major topic areas will be addressed using a round table discussion format. The Summit will also contain panel discussions of major challenges facing practitioners, including fundraising, evaluation, and staff recruitment and training.
