Springfield College Recognizes Field Supervisor of the Year

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., March 14, 2012 -- The Springfield College School of Social Work (SCSSW) has named Constance Johnson, LICSW, its Social Work Field Supervisor of the Year for 2011-2012. The award annually recognizes an outstanding community practitioner who works with the School of Social Work in providing field education for social work students. The honor was presented to Johnson at the school’s annual Field Supervisor Appreciation Event by William T. Fisher Jr., the SCSSW director of field education.

"Field education is regarded as the signature pedagogy in social work education.  The expertise, dedication and professionalism of field supervisors are essential in enabling students to synthesize classroom curriculum with professional experiences,” said Francine J. Vecchiolla, dean of the Springfield College School of Social Work. “SCSSW is fortunate to have well established relationships with a rich network of outstanding field supervisors throughout New England and upstate New York."

Johnson is the director of both the co-occurring disorder program and internship program for Valley Psychiatric Service where she has worked for 13 years. She was involved in developing the agency’s first multicultural study group, and collaboratively developed and now oversees its internship program, as well as its clinical team for trauma and addictions. Johnson facilitates adult trauma psycho-education groups for women at the Western Massachusetts Regional Women’s Correctional Center. She also has served as an adjunct professor at SCSSW since 2004. She is a graduate of the University of Maryland at Baltimore School of Social Work.

The Field Supervisor Appreciation Event honored supervisors of the school’s students in internships and fieldwork. It also provided professional development for attendees through the workshop, “Social Work Safety: Clinical Skills and Agency Culture,” presented by Johnson; Eva Skolnik-Acker, LICSW, private practitioner and safety trainer for the National Association of Social Workers—Massachusetts; and Earl N. Stuck, CEO of Family Continuity Programs, Inc.
