Springfield College School Of Human Services Opens its Southern California Campus in Tustin, California

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., July 13, 2012 Springfield College is pleased to announce the opening of the Southern California Campus of its School of Human Services (SHS), beginning with September 2012 classes. The new campus is located in Tustin, California, where it will serve students from Orange County as well as Los Angeles, San Diego, San Bernadino, and Riverside counties. 

A hallmark of the School of Human Services is community partnership, which is evident in its expanding partnership with the YMCA of Orange County. Jeff McBride, president and CEO of the YMCA of Orange County stated, “We are pleased to join with Springfield College in making this high-quality educational program available to YMCA and other human services professionals in our region. Springfield College School of Human Services has prepared thousands of professionals across the country to be leaders in this field and in their communities. This new campus will be a valuable resource to Southern California.” While the new campus is being prepared for its September opening, SHS Southern California administrators will be sharing office space with the YMCA on Newport Avenue in Tustin.

With full regional accreditation and backed by Springfield College’s 127-year history, the Southern California Campus offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Services with concentrations in Early Childhood Education and Community Youth Development, as well as a Master of Science degree in Human Services with a concentration in Organizational Management and Leadership. Classes meet two weekends a month, and most students will be able to complete their degrees in 16 to 24 months. The School accepts transfer credits from other regionally accredited institutions of higher learning. There is also a process for undergraduate students to claim academic credits for college-level learning gained through life and work experience.

The new campus will include 15,000 square feet of classrooms, a computer lab, videoconferencing center, student lounge, and offices. Located at 17542 East 17th St., the campus is easily accessible from Interstate 5 and is situated near restaurants, coffee shops, and shopping centers, with a commuter station and a dozen hotels within a 15-minute drive of the campus. Parking is free.

Dean Robert Willey of the School of Human Services stated, “Dr. Marcia Moody, the Southern California Campus Director, will be collaborating with the YMCA of Orange County as well as with human service agencies and workers in the region, working together to fulfill our mission-driven commitment to ‘provide broadly accessible higher education in human services for adult learners that embodies the principles of Humanics, community partnership, and academic excellence to achieve social and economic justice.’”

The Southern California Campus joins nine other School of Human Services campuses located in Boston and Springfield, Massachusetts; Charleston, South Carolina; Houston, Texas; Manchester, New Hampshire; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; St. Johnsbury, Vermont; Tampa, Florida; and Wilmington, Delaware.
