Father Leo James Hoar, an important spiritual force at the College for more than 30 years, has announced that he will step down from his position as director of the College’s United Campus Ministry & Spiritual Life Center for medical reasons. Father Leo has been on medical leave since April 2005.
“My medical condition at this time requires ongoing attention, which precludes my return to the College for the spring semester,” Father Leo said. “However, my physicians remain hopeful that I will be able to return to campus ministry in a modified capacity at some point in the future. Realistically, I know this will require that I step down from my leadership role as director, but I still hope to return to a part-time position at the College.”
“There are very few individuals who have come to personify Springfield College in the hearts and minds of its students and its graduates the way Father Leo does,” said Pres. Richard Flynn. “While we reluctantly accept his decision to step down as director, we recognize that it’s important for him right now to focus on his health and well-being. We very much look forward to welcoming him back to the campus whenever his health permits. Meanwhile, I’m sure Father Leo will be in the thoughts and prayers of many of us on campus.
“I know I join many thousands of students and graduates, as well as faculty, staff and other friends of Springfield College in thanking Father Leo for his unselfish commitment to the College and its mission,” Pres. Flynn added. “Through his leadership in developing a true interfaith ministry here, in his outstanding teaching and mentoring abilities, and in the countless other ways in which he touches our lives, his life and work have truly exemplified the Humanics philosophy,” Pres. Flynn added.
Pres. Flynn said the College will conduct a national search for a new director of campus ministries. Father Leo noted that the new director “will have my very best wishes for success and my unqualified support.
“Springfield College has been my singular love in life for many years,” he added. “I will always have great fondness, respect, and appreciation for the College and the people who are part of it. And I have great admiration for Pres. Flynn’s inspired leadership in creating a new and renewed Springfield College community,” Father Leo said.
