Long-time NBC executive J. Taber Bolden G’53, who served Springfield College as a corporator, trustee emeritus, chair and vice chair of the student affairs committee, died September 16, 2006. Bolden earned his undergraduate degree at Boston University and his master’s degree in guidance and personnel services at Springfield College. He served as a civilian training specialist with the Department of Army Ordinance Corporation in the early 1950s, and in 1967 began work with the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) as director of management and development in New York and later as director of personnel in Washington, D.C. He served as vice president of station affairs in Washington D.C. and New York until his retirement in 1986. Bolden received numerous awards and recognition, including the Outstanding Achievement Award as the first black television station manager of a major network. He was also a two-time recipient of the Hallmark Award for Outstanding Service from the Junior Achievement of Metropolitan Washington, and was a former trustee of the National Academy of TV Arts and Sciences.
