Football Travels To Alfred For Empire 8 Opener

The Series: This is the second game in the series that started last year with a 38-20 SC victory ... in that game, graduated QB Ryan Sylvia rushed for a career high 183 yds, graduated FB Tim Lutgen gained 163 and graduated HB Kevin Domurat added 113 ... the game was the Empire 8 opener for both teams.

SC’s Last Game: Springfield lost to Wisconsin Stout, 24-7, in its home opener and stands at 0-2 ... the last time SC lost three straight was in 2001 ... the last time SC dropped its first three was in 1993.

Empire 8 Standings: 1. Ithaca (1-0, 2-0); 2. SC (0-0, 0-2), Alfred (0-0, 1-1), Norwich (0-0, 1-2), St. John Fisher (0-0, 3-0), Utica (0-0, 2-1), 3. Hartwick (0-1, 1-1).

About This Saturday’s Game: The Saxons are 1-1 after a 42-7 win over St. Lawrence on Saturday and a 36-22 loss to Washington and Lee in its opener ... ... QB Paul Keeley was the Empire 8 Offensive Player-of-the-Week (17-26 312 yds four TDs) and OLB Brenton Brady was the Empire 8 Defensive Player-of-the-Week with eight tackles, two defelctions and an interception ... he also returned two kickoffs for 58 yards and helped out on offense with three carries for 88 yds.

SC’s Offense: Jr QB Joe Deptula (Oxford, CT) completed his first career TD pass, a 44-yarder to soph HB Joe Czarnecki (Shelton, CT) ... the 44-yard TD strike equalled the longest completion of the 2004 season ... Sr. FB Andre Clayton (Manchester, CT) missed the Stout game (calf), but will be ready for Alfred ... his replacement, jr Marc Hatch (Norwood, MA), gained 108 yds, but sustained an ankle injury and is doubtful for Saturday.

SC’s Defense: Jr LB Andrew Madigan (New Britain, CT) had his second consecutive 13-tackle game, two of which were for losses ... sr CB Mitch Dupuis (Merrimack, NH) had two interceptions, seven tackles and two deflections.

SC’s Special Teams: Soph Michael Mahoney (Mashpee, MA) punted the ball eight times in the Stout loss for a 39.8 average.

Head Coach Mike DeLong

Head Coach Mike DeLong Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters his 31st season as a head football coach in the fall of 2012. He enters his 29th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 28 years, he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980. Read more.
