Football Ranked Second In Freedom Football Conference Preseaon Poll

New London, Conn., August 20, 2002 - Springfield College was selected to finish second in the Freedom Football Conference (FFC) Preseason Coaches' Poll released today.

The Pride, which received two of seven first place votes and 38 total points, returns 14 starters from last season's squad that finished 4-5 (3-3 FFC). SC captured conference championships in 1996, 1998 and 2000.

Last season's co-champion, Western Connecticut, was picked to repeat as FFC champions. The Colonials, who were 8-2 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs last season, received 45 points and four of the seven first place votes.

SCwill host Western Connecticut in a Friday night showdown on October 11th at Benedum Field at 7 p.m.

Plymouth State, which shared the FFC Championship with Western Connecticut last year, received the other first place vote and 36 total points.

SC kicks off the season on Friday, September 6 at 7 p.m. when the Pride faces Salve Regina for the first time in school history.

Head Coach Mike DeLong

Head Coach Mike DeLong Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters his 31st season as a head football coach in the fall of 2012. He enters his 29th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 28 years, he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980. Read more.
