CAMBRIDGE, Mass., April 7, 2007 - Springfield College senior attack Rachel Lampros (Boxborough, Mass.) equaled her career-high with six goals as the Pride defeated MIT, 12-9, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse action this afternoon in Cambridge, Mass.
The victory improves SC to 6-4 overall on the season and 2-1 in NEWMAC play. With the loss, the Engineers fall to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the NEWMAC.
Pride senior attack Heidi Eidse (Bryn Athyn, Pa.) chipped in with two goals and two assists on the day, as fellow senior attack Ashley Martell (Billerica, Mass.) also contributed with two SC scores. Senior midfielder Lisa Thomas (Whitman, Mass.) and freshman midfielder Alexandra Bazzano (Newington, Conn.) were the other two members of the Pride to record goals in the win.
MIT's Casey Flynn paced the Engineers with four goals on the afternoon. Flynn registered the first two MIT scores in the contest, as the game was tied at two-all with 20:44 left in the opening half. After SC scored twice to take a brief, 4-2 advantage, the Engineers rallied with three consecutive goals to take a 5-4 lead. With just 1:27 left in the first stanza, however, Lampros scored her fourth goal of the game to knot the score at five apiece heading into halftime.
Two Martell scores in the first 3:06 of the second half gave the Pride a 7-5 lead it would never relinquish. The two teams traded goals throughout the rest of regulation, and in the end, SC walked off the field with the 12-9 victory. Pride sophomore goalie Nicole Flores (Branford, Conn.) improves to 2-0 on the season with the decision. Flores played the final 30 minutes in goal for SC, allowing four goals and making two saves.
