



SPRINGFIELD, Mass., October 7, 2006 – The Springfield College women’s volleyball team defeated Endicott College, 3-0, in the championship match of the 2006 Tom Hay Invitational earlier this evening at SC’s Blake Arena.
Game scores were 30-16, 30-26, 30-28. Earlier in the day, the host team defeated Westfield State College (3-0) and Gordon College (3-1).
In the third-place match, it was Keene State defeating Gordon (3-1), while in the fifth-place match, it was Plymouth State defeating Westfield State (3-2).
After all was said and done, Springfield finished 3-0 on the day, while Endicott and Keene State finished 2-1. Finishing 1-2 were Gordon and Plymouth State, while Westfield State ended at 0-3.
Springfield upped its record to 16-4 overall, while second-place Endicott raised its overall record to 14-9. Third-place Keene State is now 17-7, while fourth-place Gordon is now 12-7. Fifth-place Plymouth State is now 11-8, while Westfield State is now 10-11.
In the championship match, SC senior middle blocker MaryKathryn O’Neil (Liverpool, N.Y.) finished with 11 kills for the winners, while senior libero Leah Hettrick (Meriden, Conn.), an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) honorable mention All-American last year, had 20 digs. O’Neil was named MVP of the tourney, while Hettrick was named to the All-Tournament Team.
