Kimmel Named FFC's Top Defensive Player
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Oct. 13, 2003 -- Springfield College senior cornerback
Mike Kimmel was chosen the Freedom Football Conference (FFC) Defensive Player of the Week, announced Sunday.
Kimmel, who hails from
Peabody, Mass., played a huge role in the 10th-ranked Pride’s 21-7 win over Western Connecticut on Saturday in his first appearance after suffering an injury in the season-opener on Sept 6. Kimmel picked off two passes in the fourth quarter and made two
solo tackles as SC held Western Connecticut, which entered with the FFC's top-rated passing game, to just 162 yards in the air. Kimmel's first interception came with SC holding a 14-7 lead with 14:53 left in the game. He returned the interception 12 yards to the SC 49-yard line, setting up the Pride's final score. He also had an interception with 1:57 to play.
The Pride improved to 3-0 in the FFC, and went to 6-0 overall for just the fifth time in the program’s 111-year history. Since 1998, the winner of the Springfield-Western Connecticut game has gone on to win the conference championship and earn the FFC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Pride, which was ranked No. 10 in last week’s American Football Coaches Association Division III national poll, travels to Plymouth State on Sat., Oct. 18 for a 1 p.m. game.
