No. 16 Men's Lacrosse Runs Past Mass. Maritime,
18-5, In Pilgrim League Opener
, April 3, 2004 – Springfield College senior attackman Paul Purdy (Brewster, N.Y.)
scored three goals, including the 100th of his career, and added three assists to lead the No. 16 Pride to a 18-5 win over Mass. Maritime Academy in the Pilgrim League opener for both squads this afternoon on Benedum Field.
Purdy scored all three of his goals in the first quarter, as the Pride (5-3, 1-0 Pilgrim) jumped out to a 7-1 lead after 15 minutes of play. Purdy’s 100th goal gave the Pride a 6-1 lead with 2:11 remaining in the quarter.
After a goal by Mass. Maritime junior midfielder Brian McAnenny (Wakefield, Mass.)
opened the second-quarter scoring at the 8:51 mark, four unanswered Pride goals over a 3:28 span gave SC a commanding 11-2 lead with 4:20 remaining in the first half.
The Buccaneers (2-4, 0-1 Pilgrim) scored 17 seconds into the third quarter, before three straight Springfield goals in 24 seconds, including the second of three tallies in the game by junior attackman Shawn Confrin (Derry, N.H.)
, staked the Pride to a 14-3 lead with 11:32 to play in the third quarter.
Springfield went on to outscore Mass. Maritime, 4-2, to close out its fourth-straight decision and improve to 33-2 versus conference opponents since joining the Pilgrim League in 2000.
Senior midfielder Craig Gibson (South Salem, N.Y.)
scored three goals, while sophomore attackman Taylor Brown (Portsmouth, R.I.)
was credited with two goals and three assists for SC. Brown’s third assist was the 50th of his career.
SC freshman goalie Kyle Cloutier (South Hadley, Mass.)
made seven saves to register his fifth win of the season.
Freshman midfielder Alex Bernhard (Coopersburg, Pa.)
scored two goals to pace the Buccaneers.
