Football Slides Past Montclair State, 22-14
MONTCLAIR, N.J., September 13, 2003 - Springfield College senior linebacker
Jesse Baker (Rutland, Vt.) tied a school record with three interceptions and recovered a fumble as the Pride held off Montclair State, 22-14, this afternoon in messy conditions at Sprague Field.
Baker, a team captain, became the sixth player in school history to pick off three passes in a game. Baker forced a fumble, intercepted a pass, and recorded a team-high 13 tackles when the Pride defeated the Red Hawks in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 2000.
The last three times SC has started 2-0, it has gone on to win the Freedom Football Conference title (1998, 2000, 2002).

Chris Teel (Bergenfield, N.J.) blocked two Montclair State field goal attempts.
SC junior linebacker
Mark Bartelini (Montrose, N.Y.) led the defense with nine tackles and sophomore defensive back
Mitch Dupuis (Merrimack, N.H.) added eight stops. The Pride defense held the Redhawks to just 88 yards rushing and 3-of-12 on third-down conversion attempts.
Springfield junior quarterback
Ryan Sylvia (Marion, Mass.) threw two TD passes and rushed for 53 yards. Junior tight end
Louis Conte (Agawam, Mass.) and junior split end
Mike Grendal (Foxboro, Mass.) both caught their first career touchdown passes.
Junior fullback
Tim Lutgens (Greenwich, N.Y.) led the Pride with 66 yards on the ground and had a one-yard TD run in the first quarter.

Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters his 31st season as a head football coach in the fall of 2012. He enters his 29th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 28 years, he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980.
