MIDDLETOWN, Conn., December 8, 2006 - Springfield College sophomore center Lauren O'Connor (Valhalla, N.Y.) led all players with 20 points and 11 rebounds in recording her sixth double-double in seven games, but the Pride fell to the host Cardinals by a score of 73-63 this evening in non-conference play at Silloway Gymnasium.
O'Connor went 8-of-13 from the floor and 4-of-6 from the free-throw line as she grabbed 11 boards, recorded three assists, and picked up one block and one steal in the losing effort. SC is now 3-4 overall on the young season as Wesleyan improves to 4-2 with the victory.
In the opening half, the Cardinals used an 18-4 run to turn a 24-19 deficit into a 37-28 lead with 54 seconds left until halftime. Senior tri-captain Caitlyn Cuthbertson (Assonet, Mass.) then scored five of her 10 points in the final 30 seconds of the first half to cut the Wesleyan lead to 37-33 at the break.
SC opened the second stanza on a 9-2 run to take a 42-39 lead with 18:04 left to play. The contest would stay extremely close for a majority of the final half, as the score was knotted at 62 apiece with just 3:15 remaining. At that moment, the Cardinals went on an 8-0 run to take a 70-62 lead with just 1:01 left in regulation to seal the victory.
Junior guard Tara McCarthy (Bristol, R.I.) connected on thee of her four three-point field goal attempts in scoring 17 points for the Pride. Wesleyan University was led by Ali Fourney with a team-high 18 points and three steals on 9-of-11 shooting from the charity stripe. Stephanie Savas scored 11 points off the bench on perfect shooting (4-4) from the field.
SC will next travel to Colby-Sawyer College for yet another non-conference match-up on Tuesday evening, December 12th, in a 7:00 p.m. start.
