SPRINGFIELD, Mass., October 19, 2006 – Melissa Weinstein won her match at No. 2 singles and teamed with Meghan Kelly at No. 1 doubles to lead the Springfield College women’s tennis team to an 8-1 victory over Clark University this afternoon in the completion of a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) suspended match at SC’s Appleton Courts.
With the win, Springfield ends its regular-season with an overall record of 2-7 and 1-6 in NEWMAC play. Clark also finishes its season, at 1-11 overall and 0-7 in league play. The match had been suspended on September 19th due to rain with SC leading 3-0 at the time. A Clark player then defaulted in the meantime, making the score 4-0 when the teams took to the court at 5:30 p.m. this afternoon.
Weinstein, a sophomore from Allentown, Pa., defeated Clark senior Emily Slack, 6-2, 6-4, in singles play. Weinstein had earlier teamed with Kelly, a senior from Queensbury, N.Y., to defeat Clark’s No. 1 doubles team of Slack and junior Mika Snedden, 8-2
Clark’s No. 1 singles player, freshman Celina Grisi, won her match over Kelly, 6-2, 6-0, providing the Cougars with their only team point of the day.
