



SPRINGFIELD, Mass., October 3, 2005- Springfield College sophomore halfback Chris Sharpe (Derry, N.H.) has been named this week’s Empire 8 Conference Football Co-Offensive Player of the Week. Sharpe shares this week’s honor with Utica College junior quarterback Nick Martin.
Sharpe and Martin are additionally honored as Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Northwest Co-Offensive Players of the Week.
Sharpe, a graduate of Pinkerton Academy, rushed for a career-best 94 yards on just five carries and scored three touchdowns in the Pride’s Empire 8 Conference match-up with Utica College this past Saturday, October 1, in Utica, N.Y. Sharpe finished with a total of 158 offensive yards, touching the ball just six times in the game.
The sophomore averaged 18.8 yards-per-carry on the ground, including a 77-yard touchdown run. He also received a 64-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Damian Gunningsmith (Trumansburg, N.Y.). Sharpe's touchdown reception and 77-yard rush are both season-bests for the Pride. Sharpe was also a key member of SC’s special teams unit, as the sophomore returned five kickoffs for 99 yards on the day.
Next up for the Pride this weekend will be non-conference foe, Western Connecticut State University (WCSU), as the Colonials come to Springfield, Mass., on Friday evening, October 7, for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.

Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters his 31st season as a head football coach in the fall of 2012. He enters his 29th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 28 years, he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980. Read more.
