Women's Lacrosse Tops Smith In NEWMAC Tournament

Holly Carmody (Wayland, Mass.) scored three goals and had two assists, while freshman
Erin Looney (West Springfield, Mass.) added three goals and an assist as the Pride defeated Smith College, 14-6, in first-round action of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Lacrosse Tournament this evening on Benedum Field.

Ashley Capute’s (Easton, Md.) team-high three goals staked the Pioneers to the early 2-0 lead, 2:30 into the first half. A 10-2 Pride run, including three goals by Carmody and two by Looney, gave the Pride a 10-4 halftime lead en route to its third-straight win.
No. 2 seed Springfield (9-5), the defending NEWMAC Champion, advances to the semifinals of the tournament where it will face No. 3 Wellesley on Saturday, April 26, at 2:30 p.m. in Norton, Mass. Wellesley defeated No. 6 MIT, 9-8, while No. 5 Mount Holyoke upset No. 4 Babson, 14-13, in the day’s other action.
Top-seeded Wheaton, which received a first-round bye, will host Babson in Saturday’s other semifinal at 12:00 p.m. The two winners will meet on Sunday (April 27) at 1:00 p.m. for the conference championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
