Pride Trio Honored By New England Football Writers
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Nov. 20, 2001 - Springfield College seniors
Kevin Vacca and
Jason Perkins, and junior
Luke Quigley have been selected to the New England Football Writers Division II/III All-Star Team.
Vacca, a senior center from
Whitman, Mass., was a First-Team Freedom Football Conference selection in 2001 after making the all-FFC second team in 2000. A three-year starter at center, Vacca anchored an offensive front that helped the Pride establish one of the Division III's best rushing games. This fall, SC ranked seventh nationally with an average of 273.7 rushing yards-per-game. In 2000, the Pride rushed for an NCAA Division III record 4,275 yards (427.5 ypg). Vacca is also a three-time academic all-conference selection.
Perkins, a senior free safety from
Peabody, Mass., is a two-time all-FFC first-team selection. Perkins ranked fifth on the Pride in tackles (48) and tied for second in interceptions (four). In the FFC, he ranked eighth in interceptions (0.33) and 25th in tackles (5.33). In his college career, he registered 163 tackles and 16 interceptions, which is second all-time at SC.
Quigley, a junior split end/kick returner from
Athol, Mass., was an all-FFC second-team choice this season. Quigley, who captured FFC Special Teams Player-of-the-Week honors twice this season (Sept. 9 and Oct. 22), led the Pride in kick return (22.7) and punt return (11.1) yardage. Quigley also scored on both kick and punt returns this season.
The Pride (4-5, 3-3 FFC) concluded the 2001 season with a 49-35 win at No. 16 on Nov. 10.

Head Coach Mike DeLong
Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters his 32nd season as a head football coach in the fall of 2013. He enters his 30th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 28 years, he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980.
