Football Sails Past Kings Point, 26-13

KINGS POINT, N.Y., Sept, 21, 2002 – Springfield College sophomore quarterback Michael Judge (Chatham, N.J.) rushed for 142 yards, including a 97-yard first-quarter touchdown, to lead the Pride to a 26-13 win versus U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point) in a Freedom Football Conference (FFC) game at Captain Tomb Field.

This afternoon’s game was the FFC opener for the Pride, which improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the FFC. SC, which entered the game as Division III’s leading rushing team (553 yards-per-game), had 332 yards on the ground. The Mariners fell to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play on Plebe Acceptance Day at the Academy.

The Pride dominated the first half on the way to a 23-6 lead at intermission. SC totaled 255 yards of total offense, including 225 rushing yards. Sophomore halfback Kevin Domurat (Forestdale, Mass.) got the Pride on the board with an 18-yard touchdown run with 8:31 left in the first quarter. On the final play of the quarter, Judge raced 97 yards to stake the Pride to a 14-0 lead.

SC extended its lead to 17-0 when junior Greg Switaj (Ridgewood, N.J.) drilled a career-long 39-yard field goal. SC back-up quarterback Ryan Sylvia (Marion, Mass.) scored on a three-yard run with 2:04 to play to push the Pride’s advantage to 23-0. Kings Point’s David McNeal made it 23-6 on a one-yard run with :42 left in the half.

After the Mariners closed to within 23-13 in the third quarter, Switaj converted a 32-yard field goal attempt for the fourth quarter’s only points.
