Women's Lacrosse Falls In NEWMAC Championship
, April 28, 2003 --Wheaton College took an early 3-0 lead in the opening 12 minutes of play and won its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship with a 10-7 victory over Springfield College Monday at Keefe Field.
Wheaton avenged last year's conference championship game loss to the Pride and advances to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time since 1986.
Junior Lauren Maynes triggered Wheaton's offensive attack with the game's first two scores. Sophomore Caddie Jackson added a free position goal at the twelve-minute mark to extend the Lyon advantage to 3-0.
SC slowly cut into the deficit, as freshman attack Holly Carmody (Wayland, Mass.)
tallied two of the Pride's goals in the half. The visitors got as close as 4-3 with just under three minutes remaining in the stanza, but Pisano scored an unassisted goal with 12 ticks on the clock to give Wheaton a 5-3 lead heading into the break.
In the second half, the Pride again trimmed the deficit to a single goal, as freshman Erin Looney (West Springfield, Mass.)
found junior Brooke Newman (Coram, N.Y.)
right in front of the net just three minutes into the period. Newman collected the high pass and directed her shot into the bottom left corner of the net. That's as close as Springfield would get, however, as the Lyons put together a string of three consecutive goals.
The Pride's Victoria Valenti (Higganum, Conn.)
came back to tally two straight goals and cut the margin to 8-6, but Maynes responded with two consecutive scores of her own to push the lead back to four goals.
Carmody and Valenti led Springfield with two goals each, while Newman contributed a goal and an assist in the loss. Senior goalie Emily Boosahda (Bass River, Mass)
made eight saves for Springfield.
