SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 30, 2006 – Springfield College senior midfielder Holly Carmody (Wayland, Mass.) netted five goals and assisted on another score as the top-seeded Pride defeated No. 2 Wheaton College, 15-11, to win its second straight New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament Championship and thus a berth into the 2006 NCAA Division III Women’s Lacrosse Tournament.
SC (11-5), playing in its fifth consecutive NEWMAC Final against the Lyons (9-7), won its third Tournament Championship overall behind a 4-0 run in the second half with just under 11 minutes remaining. The Pride will begin NCAA Tournament play on Wednesday, May 10th, in a first round game to be determined.
The first half was neck-and-neck the whole way, as Wheaton took a 6-5 lead into the break as sophomore midfielder Alexa Jurczak tallied two goals in the final 17 seconds of the first stanza to give the Lyons the one-goal edge.
The beginning of the second half was much like the first, as the two squads traded goals until the 18:37 mark when a Carmody goal gave SC an 11-8 lead. Wheaton came right back, however, putting together a 3-0 run to tie the contest at 11 apiece with just 11:12 left in regulation. The Pride then responded with a 4-0 run in the final 10:52 to take the game and title, 15-11.
For SC, junior attacker Ashley Martell (Billerica, Mass.) racked up three assists and two goals for five points of offense. Juniors Heidi Eidse (Bryn Athyn, Pa.), Lisa Thomas (Whitman, Mass.) and Rachel Lampros (Boxborough, Mass.) all netted two goals.
The Lyons were led by sophomore midfielder Meredith Hurd with an impressive five goals. Jurczak and sophomore midfielder Sara Dimick both scored twice despite the loss. Junior goalkeeper Kristin Konig tallied 13 saves in the game, as Pride freshman goalkeeper Nicole Flores (Branford, Conn.) saved an impressive 10 Wheaton shots in the final 30 minutes of play after sitting out the first half.
For the Springfield College athletics program in the 2005-2006 seasons, this is the Pride’s fifth NEWMAC Title overall. SC women’s lacrosse will next play at Western New England College (WNEC) in its 2006 regular-season final on Tuesday afternoon, May 2nd, in a 4:00 p.m. start.
