Santo And Sylvia Earn Weekly Football Awards
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 20, 2003 -- Springfield College junior quarterback
Ryan Sylvia was selected as the Freedom Football Conference (FFC) Co-Offensive Player of the Week, and senior
Ryan Santo was picked as the FFC’s Defensive Player of the Week.
Sylvia, a
Marion, Mass., native who was also the FFC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 7, rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, and threw for 128 yards and three scores as the 19th-ranked Pride defeated 25th-ranked Kings Point, 49-28, on Saturday. Sylvia, who was 4-of-4 passing, threw TD passes of 60, 29 and 23 yards, and he scored on a two-yard rush.
Sylvia, who shared this week’s honor with Western Connecticut’s Vin Sheperis ranks first in scoring (10.0 ppg); fourth in rushing (101.7 ypg) and seventh in passing (64.3 ypg) in the FFC.
Santo, a team captain from
Warwick, R.I., had a huge day in the Pride's 49-28 win over 25th-ranked Kings Point. He made 11 tackles (8 solo) had a pass defended and forced a fumble. Santo led an SC defense that held All-American tailback David McNeal to just 56 yards on 20 carries. McNeal entered the game as the conference’s leading rusher at 143.0 yards-per-game for the Mariners, who entered the game at 2-0.
Santo, who was also tabbed the ECAC Division III Northeast Defensive Player of the Week and was named to the D3.football.com National Defensive Team of the Week, is tied third on SC in tackles (16), tied for the lead in passes broken-up (2) and has a forced fumble.
SC, which is currently 3-0 and 1-0 in the FFC, faces Coast Guard in New London, Conn., on Sept. 27 at 1 p.m.

Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters his 32nd season as a head football coach in the fall of 2013. He enters his 30th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 28 years, he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980.
