Women's Lacrosse Tramples Babson, 11-3, In NEWMAC Semifinal
, April 24, 2004 -- Springfield College used an eight-goal first half to take a commanding 8-2 advantage at the half and never looked back as the second-seeded Pride downed the third-seeded Babson College, 11-3, in Saturday's first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament semifinal round game at Wheaton College's Keefe Field.
With the win, SC improves to 11-4 and in the process advances to tomorrow afternoon's championship game, where the Pride will face the Wheaton-Wellesley College winner at 1:00 p.m. Babson falls to 10-6 on the season.
SC junior Erin Smith (Longmeadow, Mass.)
provided the Pride with an early lift, scoring the game's first two goals for a 2-0 edge not even five minutes into the contest. The Beavers responded with a pair of goals of their own by sophomore Ashley Platt and junior Libby Bryant for a 2-2 tie with 22 minutes to go.
That's all the scoring Babson would see the rest of the half, as SC rattled off six unanswered goals for an 8-2 advantage heading into the intermission. Senior Libby Beinert (Williston, Vt.)
and sophomore Holly Carmody (Wayland, Mass.)
each registered two goals during that stretch. The Pride held the Beavers scoreless for nearly 49 minutes.
SC added three more goals in the second, including two off the stick of junior Erin Looney (West Springfield, Mass.)
for an 11-2 lead.
Smith led the Pride with four goals, while Beinert, Carmody and Looney each had two tallies. Carmody and junior Spring Silverman (Huntington Valley, Pa.)
recorded two assists apiece.
