No. 4 Amherst Holds Off Women's Lacrosse, 14-11
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., March 30, 2005 -- Springfield College junior midfielder
Rachel Lampros (Boxborough, Mass.) scored four goals, but it was #4 Amherst College defeating the Pride, 14-11, tonight at Benedum Field.
Amherst jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 25:37 remaining in the first half before Pride junior forward
Holly Carmody (Wayland, Mass.) tallied two consecutive goals to even the game, 2-2, with 21:00 left in the period.
The Lord Jeffs (2-0) responded with three consecutive goals to make it a 5-2 game. The Pride (3-2) would not go away, however, scoring two-straight goals by senior forward
Erin Looney (West Springfield, Mass.) and senior midfielder
Spring Silverman (Huntingdon, Pa.) to make it a one-goal game with 7:47 left in the half. Amherst then went on a 4-0 run to end the half with a 9-4 lead.
Pride sophomore forward
Ashley Martell (Billerica, Mass.) scored the first goal of the second half (28:35) to cut the Amherst lead to four. The Lord Jeffs then went on a 4-2 run, capped by senior forward Ashley Hameling’s fifth goal of the contest to make it a 13-7 game with 12:03 left in the contest.
Two goals by Lampros and one by Carmody made it a three-goal game, 13-10, with 5:26 remaining, but the Pride would get no closer as the teams traded goals to end the game 14-11.
Freshman goalkeeper
Kristin Vaccaro (Southington, Conn.) recorded 11 saves for the Pride, while Amherst senior Liv D’Ambrosio made seven stops.
SC plays host to Wellesley College in NEWMAC action on Saturday, April 2 at 12:00 pm.
