Football Places Three On N. E. Football Writers All-Star Team
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Nov. 25, 2002 – Three members of Springfield College’s nationally ranked football team were chosen to the 2002 New England Football Writers Division II/III All-Star team.
Junior place kicker
Greg Switaj was a first-team selection, and senior defensive
Dwayne Robinson and cornerback
Mike Capotosto were named to the second team.
The all-star team will be honored at the annual New England Football Writers Captains & Awards Banquet on Thursday, Dec. 5 in Randolph, Mass.
Switaj, a native of
Ridgewood, N.J., was chosen the Freedom Football Conference (FFC)
Special Teams Player of the Year and to the all-conference first team. He led the conference in field goals (0.9 per game), was second in point-after percentage (90.9) and third in scoring (6.7 ppg) Switaj converted 40-of-44 PAT and drilled 9-of-10 field goal attempts, and was named FFC Special Teams Player of the Week twice (Sept. 9 and Oct. 13).
Capotosto, who is from
Exeter, R.I., led the conference in interceptions with six, and tied for fifth in the FFC in passes defended (11). He also registered 21 tackles.
Robinson, from
Albany, N.Y., led the Pride with 52 tackles and 12 sacks, and ranked second in the FFC in sacks (1.33) and third in tackles-for-loss (1.56).
The 19th-ranked Pride (8-2) won the FFC championship with a 6-0 record and earned a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament for the third time in five seasons. SC dropped a 16-0 decision to SUNY Brockport in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 23.

Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters his 31st season as a head football coach in the fall of 2012. He enters his 29th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 28 years, he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980.
