Wrestling Finishes Third at the NECCWA Championships; Three Advance to Nationals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (February 18, 2007) – The Springfield College wrestling team finished in third place at the New England College Conference Wrestling Association Championships at Roger Williams University in Bristol R.I. over the past weekend.

The Pride finished with 102.5 points, which trailed NECCWA Champion Johnson & Wales (133.5) and Bridgewater State (104.5).

As for the remaining team scores, they were as follows: Roger Williams 92, Williams 76, Wesleyan 74, Plymouth State 66, Rhode Island College 60, Southern Maine 53.5, MIT 44, Norwich 32, Coast Guard 31.5, WPI 17.5, Trinity 3.5, Western New England 2.

Springfield was the five-time defending champion.

Eight (of 10) Pride wrestlers finished in the Top Six, and thus earned All-New England status. Of those eight, one became New England Champion, and three advanced to the nationals.

The New England Champion was junior Elliot Smith (Richville, N.Y.) in the 184-pound weight classification. He defeated Jim Quinlan of Bridgewater State, 2-0, in the finals. Smith automatically advanced to the NCAA Division III Nationals at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa on Friday-Saturday, March 2-3.

The other two to reach nationals were a pair of SC seniors who reached the NECCWA finals. They were Mike Gaeta (Manalapan, N.J.) at 141, and Mark DeCiccio (Cranston, R.I.) at 157. Both advance because they were chosen as two of the four conference automatic wild card selections. Gaeta, who finished fifth last season at the nationals, lost to RIC’s Mike Bonora, 6-5, in the NECCWA finals. Bonora was later named the meet’s Outstanding Wrestler. DeCiccio lost to Wesleyan’s Dan deLalla in an 8-7 sudden victory decision. DeCiccio was the two-time defending conference champion at 149.

Others from SC who reached All-New England status were junior Jacob Tyler (Gouverneur, N.Y.) at 165, who also finished second; senior Ryan Hannigan (Wyantskill, N.Y.) at 125, who finished fourth; junior Chris DeBlock (Sparta, N.J.) at 149, who finished fifth; and senior Andre Lee (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) at 174, and junior Greg Dussol (Amston, Conn.), who both finished sixth.

Tyler fell to Steve Martell of Johnson & Wales in the final, 8-2.
