, Oct. 28, 2003 -- Springfield College is ranked No. 7 in this week's American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division III National Poll, announced today.
In this week’s ECAC Division III Lambert Poll, which is voted on weekly by the media and ranks the 74 Division III teams in the East region, the Pride is ranked No. 1. SC also held the top spot in the NCAA Division III Football Committee’s regional rankings, which were announced on Oct. 22. The NCAA will release its next regional ranking on Weds., Oct. 29.
SC, which is 8-0 and 5-0 in the Freedom Football Conference (FFC), is one of just 12 undefeated Division III teams. SC defeated WPI, 56-10, on Oct. 25. This was the Pride’s 12th consecutive regular-season victory, which is a school record, and 11th straight win in conference play.
Along with its unblemished record, SC is putting up some amazing numbers. The Pride is Division III’s top-rushing team (390.4 ypg), and is also ranked nationally in scoring (sixth/43.5 ppg) and total offense (11th/458.0 ypg). On the other side of the ball, SC is 10th in Division III in total defense (232.5 ypg), 12th in rushing defense (87.0 ypg) and 15th in scoring defense (12.3 ppg).
On Saturday, Nov. 8, the Pride hosts Norwich (5-3, 4-1 FFC) at 12 p.m. on Benedum Field. An SC win would clinch the conference title outright, which would be the Pride’s fifth championship since 1996, and the FFC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
