Women's Lacrosse Defeats MIT, 20-10, In NEWMAC Opener
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., March 27, 2004 – Springfield College junior forward
Erin Looney (West Springfield, Mass.) scored five goals and had an assist to lead the Pride to a 20-10 victory over MIT this afternoon in its NEWMAC opener on Benedum Field.
Freshman forward
Heidi Eidse (Bryn Athyn, Pa.) contributed with four goals and three assists, while junior
Erin Smith (Longmeadow, Mass.) added three goals and an assist for the Pride.
After Eidse’s first goal at the 28:33 mark, MIT scored the game’s next three goals, including two by sophomore midfielder
Deanna Lentz (Gaithersburg, Md.), to lead, 3-1, with 19:33 to go in the first half. SC went on to score five of the games next six goals, including two by Looney, to go up, 6-4, with 9:56 on the clock. MIT outscored the Pride, 2-1, to finish the half as SC clung to a one-goal lead, 7-6.
In the high-scoring second half in which the two teams totaled 18 goals, Eides and senior forward
Libbey Beinert (Williston, Vt.) tallied goals in under a three minute span to give the Pride a, 9-6, lead with 22:38 left on the clock.
A goal by Lentz at 22:34 followed by a Looney goal at 20:56 made the score 10-7. Junior forward
Kelsey Presson (Needham, Mass.) brought the Engineers within two goals :41 seconds later before three unanswered Pride goals made the score 13-8 with 15:56 remaining in the game. Springfield would outscore MIT, 7-2, to close out the game and go on to its third-consecutive victory of the week.
MIT (1-3) was led by Presson and Lentz, who each netted four goals. Graduate student goalie
Hee Jay Kang (Old Tappan, N.J.) came up with 12 saves in goal for the Engineers.
SC sophomore goalie
Shannah Paddock (Dayton, Ohio) recorded her second win of the season, making seven stops.
Springfield (3-1) resumes NEWMAC play on Tuesday, March 30, hosting Smith at 7:00 p.m. for its fourth-straight home match on Benedum Field.
