SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – March 19, 2008 - Anthony Perrone’s two-run double in the top of the ninth lifted William Paterson (5-4) to a 13-11 victory against Springfield March 18 at the Greater Phoenix Invitational.
Trailing 11-10 entering their final at-bat, the Pioneers’ John Elia started the inning with a ground-rule double, and advanced to third after a Dan Limone single. Sophomore Andrue Laguerre grounded into a fielder’s choice, plating Elia to tie the score but resulting in an out at second. Perrone then doubled off the wall in center field, giving William Paterson the 13-11 lead.
The Pride were unable to comeback as it went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth to drop to 3-3 this season.
William Paterson secured a 3-0 edge in the first following a two-run Perrone double and a run-scoring single up the middle off the bat of Scott Fischer . Springfield scored a run in the bottom of the third, after Drew Michael singled in Joe Kropa.
Trailing the first half of the contest, the Pride took a one-run lead in the bottom of the seventh after posting four runs in the inning. Casey Federico started it off with an RBI single that drove in Kropa to open up the flood gates. Rex Cone then singled to load up the bases and the Pride added a pair of runs after Travis Turgeon was hit by and pitch and Tim Romeo and Michael Blanchard each walked.
After WPU added a pair of runs in the top of the eighth to go up 10-9, the Pride once again answered with a pair of runs to take a one-run lead heading into the final inning. Kropa led off with a single and Federico drew a walk after Michael popped out. The duo advanced into scoring position after a wild pitch and Cone delivered a two-RBI double into center field to give the Pride a one-run lead.
Cone finished with a 4-for-5 day from the plate with a pair of RBI while Federico and Kropa each scored three runs on the day. Michael Searles was served the loss after allowing three earned runs in 2 1/3 innings while scattering four hits.
