Postseason Football Honors Continue To Roll In
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Dec. 12, 2002 – Three members of Springfield College’s Freedom Football Conference (FFC) Championship team were named to the 2002 Football Gazette Division III All-East Region Football team, announced today.
The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) also chose six SC players for its Northeast Region All-Star team.
Junior place-kicker
Greg Switaj, a native of
Ridgewood, N.J., was both a first-team All-East and All-ECAC Northeast selection. Switaj was also chosen FFC Special Teams Player of the Year and to the New England Football Writers All-Star First Team. He led the FFC in field goals (0.9, tied for 27th nationally) and finished third in the he FFC in scoring (6.7).
Guard
Andrew MacFadyen from
Natick, Mass., also earned All-East First-Team and ECAC All-Star First-Team honors. The FFC All-Conference first-team selection and team captain was a major reason why the Pride currently leads Division III in rushing (356.7 yards-per-game).
Senior cornerback
Mike Capotosto, who hails from
Exeter, R.I., was an ECAC First-Team All-Star and an All-East Region second-team pick. Capotosto, who also earned all-conference first-team honors, led the FFC in interceptions (0.60, which is tied for 27th nationally) and tied for third in passes defended (11).
Senior
Dwayne Robinson, a defensive end from
Albany, N.Y., was chosen as an ECAC All-Northeast Region First-Team All-Star. Robinson led the Pride with 12 sacks and 17 tackles-for-loss, and was second in tackles (52). He ranked second in the FFC in sacks (1.33) and fourth in tackles-for-loss (1.56).
Senior
Nick Asermelly, who is from
Hopkinton, R.I., and
Joe Pedemonti, a strong safety from
Manchester, Conn., were named to the ECAC All-Northeast Region Second Team. Asermelly was an All-FFC first-team selection at center. Pedemonti, who also earned first-team all-conference accolades, recorded three interceptions in his first season as a starter. He led the team in tackles (57) and sixth in tackles-for-loss (six, minus-23 yards).
The Pride (8-2 overall) won its fourth FFC championship in six seasons with a 6-0 conference record. SC lost to SUNY Brockport, 16-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. It was the Pride’s third NCAA Tournament appearance since 1998.

Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters his 32nd season as a head football coach in the fall of 2013. He enters his 30th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 28 years, he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980.
