Springfield College In Super Bowl XXXVIII
, Jan. 26, 2004 – Springfield College, the Birthplace of Basketball, will again be well represented in this year’s Super Bowl between the Carolina Panthers and the New England Patriots.
Carolina tight ends coach Dave Magazu
earned a bachelor of science in 1980 from Springfield College. Magazu, a native of Taunton, Mass., was a four-year starter at defensive tackle. In his senior season in 1979, SC recorded an 8-2 mark, which was the team’s highest-victory total in 14 seasons.
, the Patriots’ strength and conditioning coach for four seasons, earned a master’s degree in physical education in 1980. Woicik began his strength and conditioning training at Springfield College in 1978. He served as a track coach and weight room coordinator from 1978 to 1980. Woicik, who is now in his 14th season in the NFL, also helped produce three Super Bowl championships in Dallas from 1990 to 1996.
Springfield College graduates who have played a part in the Super Bowl include Charlie Casserly
, senior vice president and general manager of the Houston Texans, who earned his bachelor’s degree in education in 1971 and his master’s degree in guidance in 1973. Casserly was part of three Super Bowl-winning Washington Redskins teams, first as assistant general manager in 1982 and then 1987, then in 1992 as general manager.
, who earned a bachelor of science in health, physical education and recreation from Springfield College in 1976, just concluded his seventh season as assistant coach for the St. Louis Rams. Ramsdell, who was a two-year letterman at fullback at SC, was an assistant coach on the Rams’ teams that went to the Super Bowl in 2000 and 2002.

Head Coach Mike DeLong
Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74
enters his 32nd season as a head football coach in the fall of 2013. He enters his 30th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 28 years, he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980. Read more
