SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 19, 2008) -- Corey Finch (Hanover, Pa.) netted a game-high 17 points to lead the Springfield College women's basketball team to a 66-48 win over Mount Holyoke in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference action on Saturday evening.
With the win, the Pride evened its record at 7-7 and improved to 2-1 in NEWMAC play, while the Lyons dropped to 3-11, 0-3.
After a Lauren O'Connor (Valhalla, N.Y.) bucket tied the game up at six at the 15:23 mark, the Lyons rattled off an 8-2 run to own a 14-6 advantage after a Katie Austen layup. The Pride was daunted by first half turnovers as it recorded 10 in the first half. Paced behind Finch's nine first-half points, the Pride rallied to get right back in the game. Over the next 10 minutes, Springfield went on a 12-7 run to grab its first lead of the game, 22-21, at the 1:29 mark after a triple by Finch. Springfield would eventually head into the locker room up four, 27-23.
The second half opened up with the Lyons tying the contest up on two seperate occasions in the first three minutes. However, freshman Rachelle Walker (Lee, Mass.) caught fire and tallied five straight points, including a deep three, to expand the Pride's lead to seven, 38-31. That was all the cushion Springfield would need as it went on to lead by as many as 18 in the contest. The Pride iced the game down the stretch as it went 5-of-6 from the charity stripe in the final 1:35.
Finch led the way with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting to go along with six boards and three assists, while Christine Cotter (Stoughton, Mass.) netted 12 points. Liz Brosseau (Franklin, Mass.) and O'Connor each chipped with with 10 points and combined to snag 16 rebounds. The Pride shot 44.8% from the field in the game and handed out 17 assists on their 26 made buckets.
Austen registered a team-best 12 points for the Lyons while Erina Cait added 11 and Amber Sinicrope tallied 10. Jess Olson pulled down a team-best eight boards.
Springfield returns to action on Wednesday, January 23 when it heads to Northampton to take on conference-foe Smith. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 pm.
