Football Moves Up To Sixth In ECAC Lambert Poll
CAPE COD, Mass.
, Nov. 6, 2002 – Springfield College is ranked sixth in the ECAC Lambert Division III Football Poll.
The Pride is one of three New England teams ranked in the poll. Williams (7-0) is ranked eighth and Westfield State (8-0) is in a tie for the ninth spot with Salisbury (Md.).
In the New England Division III Poll, SC is second behind Westfield State. Williams, UMass-Dartmouth (9-0), Worcester State (8-1) and Western Connecticut (6-2) round out the top six teams in the poll.
The Pride (6-1) can capture its fourth Freedom Football Conference (FFC) championship since 1996 outright with a win at Norwich this Saturday. SC clinched a share of the FFC title and wrapped up a berth in the NCAA Division III Championship with a 31-22 win at WPI on October 26.
Established in 1936 as the "Lambert Trophy" to recognize supremacy in eastern college football, the award has since grown to recognize the best teams in the East in Divisions I-A, I-AA, II and III. Before asking the ECAC to assume the administration, the Meadowlands Sports Complex managed the weekly poll and the award beginning in 1983 through the 2001 season.
To be eligible for the Lambert Meadowlands Awards, a school must be located in the East or play half of its schedule against eligible Lambert teams. The territory includes New York, New Jersey, New England and Pennsylvania while teams in the bordering states of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia and the District of Columbia qualify if half of their schedule features eligible teams.
This year, 74 Division III schools are eligible for the poll. Four separate panels of media, one in each division, participate in a weekly poll and the final poll determines the winners.
