SPRINGFIELD, Mass., February 17, 2007 – Springfield College sophomore All-American Ryan Fredrickson (Manahawkin, N.J.) totaled a match-high 16 kills on 28 attempts with just three errors for a solid .464 hitting percentage as the No. 5 Pride swept No. 15 Rivier College, 3-0 (30-21, 30-18, 30-19), this evening in non-conference play at Blake Arena. Fredrickson also added five digs and three blocks.
SC freshman outside hitter AJ Nally (Rochester, N.Y.) led all players with nine digs, as he also compiled 13 kills on 28 swings with just three errors for a .357 hitting percentage. Junior middle blocker Dave Smietana (Buffalo, N.Y.) hit an impressive .545 for the match with seven kills on 11 attempts and just one error. Sophomore All-American Andy Sipe (New Oxford, Pa.) registered a match-high seven blocks to go along with eight kills for 11.5 points. Sipe’s eight kills came on 10 attempts with no errors for a match-best .800 hitting percentage.
Rivier (7-7) freshman middle hitter Matt Ferreira produced a team-high six digs and added seven kills. Senior outside hitter Zach Stedman led the Raiders in the kills department with nine. Stedman also had one service ace to lead Rivier with 10 points. Freshman middle hitter Zach Phillips contributed with eight kills.
Pride freshman setter Eric Shoemaker (Mount Wolf, Pa.) tallied a match-high 44 assists in just his second career collegiate start. Raider freshman setter Zach Hansen recorded 23 assists for Rivier, followed by junior outside hitter Clint Whelan with nine.
SC has won 10 of its past 12 matches since starting the season 0-3. The Pride improves to 10-5 overall on the year and remains 3-0 in Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Hay Division play. SC will next travel to Vassar College for yet another non-conference match on Tuesday night, February 20th, at 7:00 p.m.
