No. 7 Football Too Much For WPI, 56-10
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Oct. 25, 2003 – Springfield College junior fullback
Tim Lutgens (Greenwich, N.Y.) led SC with 113 yards rushing and one touchdown as the seventh-ranked Pride defeated WPI, 56-10, this afternoon in a Freedom Football Conference (FFC) game at Benedum Field.
SC, which rushed for a season-high 493 yards, moves to 8-0 overall (5-0 FFC) for fourth time in program’s 111-year history. The Pride set a school record with its 12th-consecutive regular-season victory, and clinched a share of the FFC title. SC can capture its fifth conference crown outright and earn the FFC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament with a victory against Norwich on Nov. 8.
The SC defense was led by junior linebacker
Justin Fletcher (Orwell, Vt.), who recorded a game-high 11 tackles and three sacks. Senior linebacker

Jeremiah Goodnow (Harwich, Mass.) and sophomore strong safety
Shawn McGowan (Pawtucket, R.I.) each had an interception.
McGowan picked off an Adam Ralston pass on the first play of the game, setting up junior quarterback
Ryan Sylvia’s (Marion, Mass.) first touchdown of the game, a 15-yard rush just 1:30 into the contest. SC junior halfback
Kevin Domurat (Forestdale, Mass.) raced 26 yards with 1:20 left in the first to extend the lead to 14-0.
In the second quarter, WPI’s Jeremy Griffin (Waterford, Conn.) drilled a 33-yard field goal to cut the lead to 14-3 at 12:26. The Pride responded by reeling off the next 21 points. Lutgens rumbled 31 yards with 9:45 left in the half to make the score 21-3, and junior quarterback
Michael Judge (Chatham, N.J.) capped an 11-play, 77-yard drive with a five-yard scoring rush with 1:16 to play. On the ensuing drive, SC senior
Luke Quigley (Athol, Mass.) returned a punt 57 yards, and Judge found senior spilt end
Farrand Violette (Houston, Texas) in the end zone on a 22-yard TD pass on the next play with 0:35 remaining in the half to give SC a 35-3 lead.
Sylvia scored the third quarter’s only touchdown on a four-yard rush at 11:03. Sophomore fullback
Mike Fiscella (Port Chester, N.Y.) and senior halfback
Craig Belanger (W. Greenwich, R.I.) added fourth-quarter scoring runs.
For the Engineers (2-5, 0-3 FFC), sophomore Kevin Moore (Charlton, Mass.) had a 17-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.
