Sylvia Selected FFC's Top Player

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 8, 2003 -- Springfield College junior quarterback Ryan Sylvia (Marion, Mass.) was selected as the Freedom Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week, announced Monday.

This is the third time Sylvia has been honored by the FFC. He was the conference's rookie of the week twice in the 2001 season.

On Tuesday, Sylvia was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Northeast Player of the Week. He was also voted the Springfield College Maroon Club Male Athlete of the Week. The Maroon Club Athlete-of-the-Week Award recognizes outstanding performances by SC student-athletes on a weekly basis.

Sylvia lifted the Pride to a 38-7 season-opening victory at Salve Regina on Saturday. Despite sharing the quarterback duties with classmate Michael Judge, he rushed for 135 yards and scored four touchdowns in the win. Sylvia became the first player to score four touchdowns since Kevin Cahill scored five in a 48-28 on October 28, 2000.

Sylvia scored the first touchdown of the 2003 season, a 60-yard TD jaunt which was one-yard shy of his career-long rush. He later added scores of 11, one and 20 yards.

Sylvia and the Pride travel to Montclair (N.J.) State for a non-league on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m.
