SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — December 14, 2007 -- Despite a 17-point, 10-rebound effort from Lauren O'Connor (Valhalla, N.Y.), the Springfield College women's basketball team fell at Union, 70-61, on Friday evening.
The loss drops the Pride to 4-4 on the season while Union improves to 4-3.
Springfield jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the first 3:47, but Union tied the contest at 18-18 with 9:52 left. After the Pride had a 23-20 lead with 6:01 remaining in the first stanza, the Dutchwomen went on a 10-2 run in the next 2:32 for a 30-25 lead with 3:29 left. Neither team would score in the final three minutes of play as Union went into the locker room with a 30-25 advantage.
Devon Ciliberto scored 16 of her points in the second half to lead the way for Union, as her two free throws with 16:24 left made it 41-30. The Pride got as close as three at 55-52 with a three-point play by Tara McCarthy (Bristol, R.I.) with 5:38 remaining. Moments later Ciliberto hit a three and Union began a 12-5 run for a 67-57 lead with 29 seconds left to play. Ciliberto had eight points during the run for the home squad.
O'Connor finished with 17 points and 10 boards while Christine Cotter (Stoughton, Mass.) added 14 points. Corey Finch (Hanover, Pa.) added 11 points on the night for the Pride.
The Dutchwomen took advantage of their time at the charity stripe as they went 24 of 29 in the game, while the Pride managed just 8 of 12 for the contest from the line.
The Pride return to action when it plays host to the Holiday Inn/Naismith Classic on January 3rd and 4th. The Pride opens up play with Wesleyan on the 3rd at 1:00 p.m.
