SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- October 16, 2007 -- The Springfield College women’s soccer team extended its home shutout streak to 565:01 as it shut out Mount Holyoke, 3-0, on Tuesday evening in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference action.
The Pride, currently on a four-game winning streak now stands at 13-2, 6-1 in league play, while the Lyons fall to 2-12, 0-7.
The last time the Pride allowed a goal at home was on September 8 in a 2-1 win against Brandeis. Springfield has now pitched 11 shutouts on the season, including nine at Brock-Affleck Field at the Irv Schmid Sports Complex.
Caitlin Sawczuk (Plainville, Conn.) opened up the scoring just 6:36 into the contest when she followed up a rebound off of Mount Holyoke keeper Elaine Harvey to put the home team up 1-0. Nicole Hanewich (Smithfield, R.I.) then tallied the Pride’s second goal of the game at the 25:14 mark when she found the back of the net. Hanewich, who took 14 shots in the game, now has scored a team-best 14 goals this season.
Shanda Kogut (Preston, Conn.) closed out the scoring for the Pride in the first half when she registered a goal with 12:46 remaining in the first stanza.
Springfield outshot the Lyons, 27-2, in the game.
Sue Jenney (Agawam, Mass.) and Lindsay Volk (Hinesburg, Vt.) combined for the shutout. Volk made one save in the second half.
Springfield returns to action this weekend in its final home contest of the 2007 regular season as it hosts NEWMAC-foe Wellesley at 2:30 p.m. as a part of Springfield College’s Homecoming festivities.
