Sylvia Named FFC Co-Offensive Player of the Week
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Oct. 20, 2003 -- Springfield College junior quarterback
Ryan Sylvia (Marion, Mass.) was selected the Freedom Football Conference (FFC) Co-Offensive Player of the Week, announced today.
This is the third time Sylvia has been honored as the offensive player of the week by the FFC this season. He was the conference's rookie of the week twice in the 2001 season. Sylvia shares this week’s award with Coast Guard’s Jon Tillman.
Sylvia had a big day in the eighth-ranked Pride's 62-0 win at Plymouth State on Saturday. He rushed for 109 yards and four touchdowns on just seven carries, and threw one pass, a 45-yard scoring strike. In the first quarter alone, he rushed for three scores and threw for the one TD as SC jumped out to a 27-0 lead. This was Sylvia's seventh 100-yard rushing day of his career.
Sylvia, who also ran for four touchdowns in the Pride’s 38-7 season-opening victory at Salve Regina (Sept. 6), is the first player to score four touchdowns since Kevin Cahill scored five in a 48-28 win over Cortland (N.Y.) on October 28, 2000.
Sylvia leads the FFC in scoring (12.0 ppg), and is fourth in rushing (104.0 ypg) and total offense (154.6 ypg). His season totals include 728 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns to go along with 354 yards passing and seven scores.
The Pride (7-0, 4-0 FFC), which entered Saturday’s game ranked eighth in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division III National Poll, hosts WPI on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
