No. 14 Football Runs Past No. 13 Ithaca, 51-22
SPRINGIELD, Mass., Oct. 4, 2003 – Springfield College junior fullback
Tim Lutgens (Greenwich, N.Y.) rushed for 160 yards and one touchdown as the 14th-ranked Pride defeated No. 13 Ithaca, 51-22, in a battle of unbeaten teams at Benedum Field this afternoon.
SC moves to 5-0 overall for the fourth time since 1970. The 29-point margin of victory is the Pride’s biggest win over the Bombers in 30 meetings dating back to 1973.
SC junior quarterback
Ryan Sylvia (Marion, Mass.) rushed for 112 yards and two touchdowns, and threw a 46-yard scoring pass to junior tight end
Louis Conte (Agawam, Mass.) on a crucial third down-and-three play with 12:23 remaining in the third quarter. Senior split end
Farrand Violette (Houston, Texas) and junior quarterback
Michael Judge (Chatham, N.J.) also had scoring runs.
The SC defense, which allowed just 27 yards rushing in the first half, was spearheaded by junior linebacker
Justin Fletcher (Orwell, Vt.), who had nine tackles, and senior linebacker
Jesse Baker (Rutland, Vt.), who made eight stops and had one tackle-for-loss. Senior cornerback
Chris Teel (Bergenfield, N.J.) broke up two passes and had five tackles, and senior strong safety
Ryan Santo (Warwick, R.I.) had an interception and two passes defended.
For the Bombers (3-0), junior wide receiver Jeff Welch had a career day with nine catches for 121 yards.
SC broke open a one-point game in the second quarter by scoring 17 points over the final seven minutes of the half. Senior All-American place-kicker
Greg Switaj (Ridgewood, N.J.) drilled a 19-yard field goal with 6:56 to go, and Judge hit senior halfback
Dustin Grosso (Glen Cove, N.Y.) with a 29-yard TD pass less than two minutes later.
With 2:07 left in the third quarter, the Bombers converted an SC fumble by marching 80 yards on 13 plays, capped by a one-yard TD run by senior running back Caleb Greer-Carney, to close within 23-15.
In the fourth quarter, Sylvia hit Conte with a 46-yard scoring pass to make it 30-15 with 12:23 to play. Lutgens extended the lead to 37-15 with a one-yard TD run after SC went 63 yards in just five plays. Judge and Sylvia added one-yard scoring runs in the final three minutes.

Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters his 31st season as a head football coach in the fall of 2012. He enters his 29th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 28 years, he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980.
