The Hopewell Junction, N.J. native made the key play late in the fourth quarter to help Springfield secure the 28-27 victory over Norwich. The Cadets scored a touchdown to come within one point with 3:38 left in the game, but Varvara blocked the extra point attempt, allowing the Pride to run out the clock for the win.
This year, Varvara has been spectacular on special teams. He recovered a blocked punt against Union and returned it for a touchdown. He also blocked a critical extra point against St. Lawrence in a 21-20 homecoming win.
It was Springfield’s sixth ECAC bowl win in as many opportunities and second straight. The Pride also notched wins in 1995, 2004, 2009, 2010 and 2012.
